An absolutely incredible event.

Besides the fantastic musicianship, what was truly evident was the fun everyone on stage was having - and judging from the cheers from the audience, and the standing ovations, they weren't the only ones! A stellar lineup was announced, including the core of Mona's Hot Four: Dennis Lichtman, clarinet; Gordon Webster, piano; Nick Russo, guitar/banjo; Jared Engel, banjo/bass; Dalton Ridenhour, piano; Mike Davis, trumpet; Gordon Au, trumpet; Matt Musselman, trombone; Josh Holcomb, trombone; Dan Levinson, clarinet/sax; Rob Adkins, bass; Kevin Dorn, drums; Marion Felder, drums.
The evening followed a format of Mona's (although with much more space and air!), but with four-hands-one-piano, and two drum kits. And as if that wasn't enough, special guests Cassidy Holden (bass, banjo), Bria Skonberg (trumpet) and Andrew Nemr (tap dancer) joined the ensemble for a jam session second to none.

Thank you, sincerely, to all involved.

For more information about the Sidney Bechet Society and other upcoming concerts, http://www.sidneybechet.org/
And to get a small (and crowded) taste of a jam session like this again, head to Mona's on Tuesday nights from 10:30pm until the wee hours, on Avenue B, between 13th & 14th Streets.

Stunning venue - the Cutting Room has gorgeous high ceilings, beautiful decor. It was a full house (should it be anything else when the Hot Sardines perform?). And the band killed it ...
I am unashamedly a huge fan of the Hot Sardines and each of its members, collectively and separately. Miz Elizabeth on vocals, washboard, tambourine, and dance (Elizabeth Bougerol) keeps the band tightly connected with the audience, and mixes it up a little when she sings in French. Evan Palazzo (piano) plays so cleanly! Alex Raderman keeps the rhythm going on drums, and leftie Evan Crane really holds it down on the bass. For one of the numbers, he brought the bass to where I think it should be - front and center ... fabulous! Joe McDonough (trombone) is always in the groove and Nick Myers (reeds) enjoys the odd instrument-juggle every now and then, switching between sax and clarinet in some pieces. Jason Prover is masterful on the trumpet - or the tea kettle! And tap dancer Eddy Francisco ... what can one say?! Just amazing - and how he isn't drenched after his routines, I don't know!
The Hot Sardines is way more than a band ... and what they do is more than perform. They put on a show - high energy and hugely entertaining. Tight and professional and very well rehearsed, they don't even break out music stands/books when they announce the piece is new to them!
If you've never seen the Hot Sardines, don't delay - you can see where they're next performing on their site: http://hotsardines.com/upcoming-shows/

"Don't Beat Your Wife (every night)" is the creation of Anders Alterskjaer Whist, as a tribute to Raymond Scott. Thanks to Musikk i Nordland County Council, the fabulous Mean Ensemble traveled from Norway to perform this tribute show for the first time in the USA, performing at the Baruch Performing Arts Center. They are the only band since Raymond's original 1930s Quintette to perform the maestro's tunes without reading sheet music - quite a feat, given the complexities of the arrangements. To add more authenticity to the recreation of the times circa Raymond Scott, they dressed in similar clothes of the era, some members smoked cigarettes on stage, and all wore glasses frames - even without lenses!

The Ed Wood of composers, Raymond Scott (1908 to 1994) was one of the most prolific and influential American composers, recording innovators and electronic instrument inventors of the 20th century. In his early jazz years, the Brooklyn-born Scott was known for his heavy hand as a bandleader, demanding succinct adherence to his complex orchestral arrangements, which were played by memory without sheet music. His signature “descriptive jazz style,” relied more on tight arrangements than improvisation.

A recording fanatic, Scott made futuristic compositions for television and radio commercials. His electronium is considered the first synthesizer. His compositions have also been used on The Simpsons Ren & Stimpy, and in early Jim Henson projects.

The cast includes music director Havard Lund on bass clarinet, Oivind Nussle (violin), Johannes Skyberg (viola), Hans-Urban Andersson (cello and baritone saxophone), Hakan Henriksen (double bass), Arnfinn Bergrabb (percussion), Are Simonsen (electronium and guitar), Lasse Rossing (trumpet) and Ole Kristoffersen (clarinet).

Produced by Vibeke Forshaug, the Mean Ensemble excelled at performances of classics like Powerhouse!, In an 18th Century Drawing Room, The Penguin, War Dance for Wooden Indians, New Year's Even in a Haunted House and many more, and reminisce in commercials for products like Wrigleys, Conty Fair, Hostess Twinkies, Good Air, Light Works, and Society National.

For a reminder of the fun of the concert: http://youtu.be/AOrn17qeZg8
For more information: http://raymondscott.com/#7ed/blogger

A record number of dancers came out to enjoy the four bands - each quite different from the other, from the tight trio of Kevin Dorn's to the tap antics of Eddy with the Hot Sardines, and Emily Asher's Garden Party and Dan Levinson's New Millennium All Stars rounding out the fabulous production.

The festivities started with the presentation of scholarships to Paolo Cantarella (drums), David Zaks (piano), Matthew Hartmann (trumpet) and Isaac Dye (tenor sax), after which they played, accompanied by Jacob Webb (bass).

And then the bands started - Emily Asher's Garden Party on first, great performances, including jokes about the size of the chandeliers! Her band: Emily Asher (Leader/Trombone and Vocals), Alphonso Horne (Trumpet), Peter Reardon-Anderson (Reeds), Nick Russo (Guitar/Banjo), Jared Engel (Bass), Jay Lepley (Drums).

Next up, the effervescent Hot Sardines, whose high energy performance earned them a standing ovation at the end of the set. On the bandstand: Evan Palazzo (Piano), Elizabeth Bougerol (Vocals), Eddy Francisco (Tap), Jason Prover (Trumpet), Evan Crane (Bass), Joe McDonough (Trombone),
Nick Myers (Clarinet/Saxophone), Alex Raderman (Drums),
Bob Parins (Guitar).

After the presentation of the Pee Wee Russell Stomp Awards to Frank Wess (in absentia) and Jazz Advocate Rhonda Hamilton, it was time for Kevin Dorn's Trio, challenging the dancers with some fun syncopations. Band personnel: Kevin Dorn (Drums), Mark Shane (Piano), Mike Weatherly (Bass).

And finally, closing out the amazing afternoon, Dan Levinson's New Millennium All-Stars, with some of the coolest cats in the band! Randy Reinhart (Trumpet), Matt Musselman (Trombone), Dan Levinson (Clarinet/Tenor Sax), Dalton Ridenhour (Piano), Molly Ryan (Guitar/Vocals), Mike Weatherly (Bass), Kevin Dorn (Drums).

For more information about this, and other Jersey Jazz events, http://www.njjs.org/

The Salon did it in their own inimitable style - at the fabulous DL, three levels of entertainment space, each with their own ambiance and space to dance or lounge.

On the main entrance level, a bar/restaurant, candle-lit tables, chandelier, and Jessy Carolina and The Hot Mess, featuring Jerron "Blind Boy" Paxton, for your dancing and listening pleasure. Up the curved staircase to the second level, an open dance floor and bar, subdued lighting and the Baby Soda Jazz Band, with Bria Skonberg. And finally, the rooftop level - palm trees to the ceiling, water-features, private alcoves for lounging, a wrap-around dance floor, and the Grand Street Stompers blasting forth! Add to the mix specialty cocktails, burlesque performers, dancing girls and beads ... laissez les bon temps rouler!

For more information about future Salon events, and to sign up to their mailing list, please see: http://www.thesalon.biz/

The Art Deco Society of Virginia held their inaugural Jazz Age Preservation Ball - a lavish evening of music, dancing and gaiety celebrating the red hot Jazz Age of the Roaring '20s. Guests were invited to dress to the nines and join the festivities at the historic Bolling Haxall House in Richmond, Virginia. The John Winn Jazz All-Stars provided live music, performances were by Fidgety Feet, a dance troupe from Washington DC, and by The Garter Snaps performing their feather fan duet. Andy Nishida and Rita Shiang taught a beginner Charleston dance lesson at the start of the evening, and St. Germain had specialty cocktails on hand!

The event was also a fund-raiser for the Byrd Theater Foundation, and Todd Schall Vess and Jaclyn Witthoefft gave a short presentation about the Foundation.
For more information about the Art Deco Society of Virginia, contact http://artdecova.org/

Bufford isn't singing simple love songs. In her brand new show at the Metropolitan Room, CAROLE J. BUFFORD: Body and Soul, she is singing songs fueled by burning passion! The songs are the musical equivalents of emotional earthquakes. These aren't sweet songs about falling in love, first dates, or will he or she kiss me. No. These are songs about, among other things, overpowering lust, bitter hatred, and fiery desire. Oh, and some of them are also funny! Culled from Broadway, rock 'n' roll, pop and country sources, this is a show unlike any other you've seen, performed by a young artist who has quickly emerged as a star thanks to her uniquely original, theatrical style. Carole J. Bufford is a critically acclaimed concert performer and nightclub star, and has performed to ovations here in New York at Rose Hall at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Town Hall in numerous Broadway by the Year concerts, and Feinstein's at Loew's Regency in the hit, long-running 11 O'Clock Numbers at 11 O'Clock show. Most recently, she received rave reviews from The NY Times and the Wall Street Journal (among many others) for her solo show Speak Easy at The Metropolitan Room.

Body and Soul was created exclusively for Carole J. Bufford and is produced by Scott Siegel (Broadway by the Year, Broadway Unplugged, The Nightlife Awards, 11 O'Clock Numbers at 11 O'Clock, The Broadway Ballyhoo, etc.). The Musical Director is Ian Herman.

For tickets to this show, and others, please see http://metropolitanroom.com/

Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, The Eagles, and Crosby, Stills & Nash, to name just a few, all lived, loved, created, and collaborated there. Lauren Fox tells the story of this epic time in American music history, and sings the songs that it inspired.

She's joined on stage by Jon Weber (piano/Musical Director), Peter Calo (guitar) and Ritt Henn (bass).

And, according to Will Friedwald at the Wall Street Journal, "The music she sings may not be that of the Great American Songbook, but nascent headliner Lauren Fox is actually one of the best traditional-style cabaret performers currently emerging ... Canyon Folkies, covering the whole of the California folk movement, offers a less intimate view [than that presented in her previous show, "Love, Lust, Fear and Freedom: The Songs of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen"] but is equally illuminating and outstanding musically, thanks in part to the arrangements of musical director Jon Weber."

On one day, Michael Ingbar and his helpers coordinate bands, dancers and vintage lovers to gather at Second Avenue, dance on the subways, and join the bands on the trains as they travel back and forth.
After the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, we weren't sure that this special annual event would happen this year, but the MTA made it happen.
Revelers gathered, many dressed to the nines in vintage wear, and an afternoon of joy was shared by one and all.

For the past few years, each Tuesday night, Mona's Hot Four (the core group being founder Dennis Lichtman (clarinet), Gordon Webster (piano), Nick Russo (guitar/banjo) and Jared Engel on bass) begin a jam session in a small discreet bar on the Lower East Side. Space is at a premium, but that doesn't seem to discourage those who want to hang out and listen, and those who want to sit in and play the trad jazz that so many seem to love. The atmosphere is high energy, with a sense of anticipation as to who might sit in next, and the jam goes on until the wee hours of the morning. This CD was recorded live during one of those jam sessions, and features a number of top class musicians.
For more information about Mona's Hot Four and to purchase any of their CDs, please see http://www.dennislichtman.com/
