The year is 1932. Thousands of Richmond’s cultural and social elite have arrived en masse to the Jefferson Hotel to catch the first glimpse of the Spirit of the Ball as she descends from the ceiling in an immense decorative tulip. Though it was a short-lived affair, the Beaux Arts Ball was THE party of the century!
Each January, in the spirit of the Beaux Arts Ball, the Art Deco Society of Virginia hosts its annual Jazz Age Preservation Ball. This Roaring ’20s gala is designed to raise awareness and funds for Art Deco preservation projects in the Commonwealth - this year, the benefactor is the Ashland Theater.
What a fabulous event at the Bolling Haxall House in Richmond - Charleston dance lesson by Andy Nishida and Rita Shiang, foot-tapping live jazz for our dancing pleasure by Halley's Hot Gumbo Swingtet, vintage dance exhibition by Jen Barnett and Joe Pace, sultry elegant burlesque by Deepa De Jour, and an exquisite vocal performance by Anna Tuckwiller and her pianist Jacob Ungerleider. Not to mention, the fabulous buffet dinner, and the silent auction to raise additional funding for Ashland Theater.
